An Introduction to The Part of Speech

If you are a student and you are learning English at the moment, knowing and understanding the part of speech is very important. Without a good knowledge on it, you will have difficulties in understanding sentences especially long ones.

In English, there 8 part of speech

Noun	thing or person	pen, dog, work, music, town, London, teacher, John	This is my teacher. He lives in Jakarta. We live in Indonesia.
Adjective	describes a noun	a/an, the, 2, some, good, big, red, well, interesting	I have two cars. My cars are big. I like big cars.
Adverb	describes a verb, adjective or adverb	quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really	My cat eats quickly. When he is very happy, he runs really quickly.
Pronoun	replaces a noun	I, you, he, she, some	Nancy is American. She is tall.
Preposition	links a noun to another word	to, at, after, on, but	I went to school on Tuesday.
Conjunction	joins clauses or sentences or words	and, but, when	I like cars and I like motorbikes. I like cars and motorbikes. I like cars but I don't like motorbikes.
Interjection	short exclamation, sometimes inserted into a sentence	oh!, ouch!, hi!, well	Oh my God! Hi! How are you? Well, I think so.

Some people divide the part of speech into 9 or 10. But Private IELTS will stick to the 8 traditional parts. They divide verb into 2 categories: lexical verbs and Auxiliaries. And they also put Determiners into a different category instead of placing them under Adjectives.
